St. Lucia Wetland Park - a World Heritage Site in South Africa which joins other international attractions like the Great Barrier Reef and the Great Pyramids. Humankind has long recognized that our globe harbours places of such outstanding value that they deserve to be conserved & protected for the benefit of all humanity.

The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park is South Africa's first natural World Heritage Site. This entire coastline including the surrounding big 5 game reserves is known as the Elephant Coast.

Sun, Sea, Sand & Safari All In One Area

Sun - Over 300 sun-filled days a year. Sea - Warm Indian Ocean - all year. Sand - The highest vegetated sand dunes in the world. Safari - The big 5.  A unique experience is offered whereby the big 5 & whales can be spotted on the same day.

The Elephant Coast covers a 180 km stretch of  pristine coastline north of St Lucia all the way to the Mozambique border and includes all the surrounding big five game reserves. The region has recently been named the Elephant Coast to try and encaptulate the diversity & the intertwining eco-systems which is offered from a one stop destination- St. Lucia South Africa. The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park offers visitors some of the most diverse wildlife  and outdoor experiences imaginable.  This unique, 38 000 ha expanse of lake, islands and estuary, incorporates an astonishing variety of habitats ranging from the Lebombo mountains to grasslands, forests, wetlands, mangroves and vegetated dunes, with magnificent beaches and coral reefs.

The combined activities in & around the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park is found nowhere else on earth!

"The St. Lucia Wetlands Park must be the only place on the globe where the world's oldest land mammal (the rhinoceros) and the world's biggest terrestrial mammal (the African elephant) share an ecosystem with the world's oldest fish (the coelacanth) and the world's biggest marine mammal  (Whale)"

Former President Nelson Mandela, 10th August 2001.

The World Heritage status awarded to the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park includes the fact that the St. Lucia Wetland Park protects 5 distinct but interconnected ecosystems.

  • The marine Ecosystem - coral reefs, rocky & sandy beaches.

  • The Eastern Shores - barrier between lake & sea

  • The Mkuze Swamps - pans & papyrus

  • Lake St. Lucia - The largest Estuary in Africa

  • The Western Shores- an old marine shoreline
